DEERING
Deering Alaska is located approx. 57 miles S.W of Kotzebue It's geographic location: 66� 04' N, 162� 42' W Climate: Long cool winters and cool summers. Average annual precipitation is 9 inches, with about 35 inches of snowfall. Visitor Facilities: Accommodations available with kitchen facilities at the Deering Multi-purpose Facility (363-2136). Village Agent: Ruth Ann Moto (907)363-2154 it has a population of about 157 it started as a old camp ground for a Native Tribe of Inupaq's who eventually settled there. In the gold rush days of the early 1900 hundreds the Population rose to over 5,000 because of Gold being found in the hills about 5-15 miles outside of the town limits but when the Gold was eventually depleted the population dropped to it's present state. The town itself resides on a permanent Sand Bar that also used to be a old Native Burial Ground. The only way to go to Deering is either fly in from Kotzebue or by boat in the summer or by snow machine in the winter. Currently there is only one road leading outside of the town it leads to and past a small airport which can only support single or twin engine aircraft. Deering has allot to offer a "Outdoor" type of Person who loves the true feeling of "Getting back to Nature" one because of the size of the town, Two because the Remoteness of the Location itself. during the summer you can see quite an array of Wildlife such as Brown Bear, Caribou, Raindeer, Ptarmigan, Arctic Fox, Wolverine ect.... |
